In 2002, Q Magazine named The Flaming Lips as one of the “50 Bands to See Before You Die.”
I didn’t know this at the time when I watched The Flaming Lips performed at Nathans Phillips Square here in Toronto when our city hosted the 2015 Pan American Games last summer.
There were thousands of people in attendance that night. And The Flaming Lips with its frontman Wayne Coyne gave us an unforgettable lush, multi-layered psychedelic rock experience.
Aside from the complex stage light configurations and video projections. there was a large amounts of confetti and big balloons released for the fans to bounce around.
There were balloon robots on the stage including a huge alien with butterfly wings, while Wayne Coyne sang Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Part 1. At this point, the stage looked like a children’s fantasy park but the audience was just mesmerized.
And of course, the show included frontman Wayne Coyne’s signature man-sized plastic bubble, in which he traversed the audience.
Then back on the stage for his final song Do You Realize??
Frontman Wayne Coyne waved to the crowd giving them the peace sign. Then the band left the stage and the word LOVE was projected on the screen.
I didn’t want it to be over and I was pretty sure the rest of the audience that night last summer, didn’t either. So, most of us did the next best thing… stayed for the nightly fireworks.
